Using versions of a document
iA Writer Pro for Mac automatically saves versions of your document every hour as you write, and more frequently when you’re making many changes. You can also save a version at any time. You can then browse through document versions, and go back to an older version.
- To browse and interact with versions:

- Open the Versions interface:
- In Mac OS X Mavericks (10.9) and Mountain Lion (10.8), select Revert To… then choose Browse All Versions.
- Alternatively, in Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8) move the pointer to the right of the document’s name in the Title bar, click the down arrow that appears, then choose Browse All Versions.
- Use the tick marks in the timeline or click on documents to browse versions.
- You can perform the following actions:
- To Restore a version, select it then click Restore.
- To Duplicate a version, select it, hold down the Option key, then click Restore a Copy.
- To Copy text from a version, select text and use Edit ➤ Copy or Command-C.
- To Delete a version, select it, move the pointer to the right of the document’s title, click the down arrow, then choose Delete This Version.
- To Delete all versions, click the down arrow to the right of the document’s title, hold down the Option key, then choose Delete Old Versions.
Click Done to leave the versions interface without performing any changes.
- Open the Versions interface:
- To save a version as a new file:

Select the version then choose File ➤ Save.
Alternatively, hold down Option and choose File ➤ Save As… to rename the new file.
- To revert a document to the last saved or last opened version:
- Move the pointer to the right of the document’s name in the Title bar, click the down arrow that appears, then choose Last Saved, Previous Save, or Last Opened.
iA Writer Pro saves your document as a plain text file using UTF-8 encoding. The file extension used depends on the document’s Workflow state:

.md - Edit
.edit - Read
.read
